Job Title: Software Engineering Manager (Embedded/Firmware – Hands-Off)

Location: Cardiff

Salary: £80,000-£90,000 + Bonus

Reports to: Director of Technology

About the Role

We are seeking a hands-off Software Engineering Manager with a background in embedded systems and firmware development to lead and grow a high-performing engineering team in a highly regulated industry (e.g., medical devices, automotive, aerospace, defence, etc.). This is a strategic and leadership-focused role, ideal for someone with a strong technical foundation who thrives on enabling and developing others to deliver excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of embedded software/firmware engineers.

  • Drive engineering best practices in a safety-critical, compliance-driven environment.

  • Oversee project planning, technical delivery, and team performance without direct coding responsibility.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product, hardware, QA, and regulatory teams to ensure cohesive delivery.

  • Champion continuous improvement, agile practices, and engineering process maturity.

  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and talent development within the team.

  • Ensure all development aligns with relevant standards (e.g., ISO 26262, DO-178C, IEC 62304, etc.).

Key Requirements

  • Proven experience as an Engineering Manager or Technical Leader in embedded/firmware software.

  • Strong understanding of embedded systems development, even if not hands-on in current role.

  • Demonstrated leadership in a regulated environment (medical, automotive, aerospace, etc.).

  • Deep understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC), particularly in compliance-heavy contexts.

  • Experience managing cross-functional engineering teams in agile or hybrid environments.

  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, and coaching skills.

Desirable

  • Experience working with regulatory audits or certification processes.

  • Background in systems engineering or integration.

  • Familiarity with tools and languages commonly used in embedded development (e.g., C/C++, RTOS, ARM Cortex, etc.).

  • Exposure to cybersecurity standards for embedded systems (e.g., ISO/SAE 21434).

What We Offer

  • Opportunity to shape the direction of a technically strong team.

  • Work on products with real-world safety and impact.

  • Supportive and forward-thinking leadership team.

  • Competitive salary and benefits package.

  • Hybrid/flexible working arrangements.
