Job Description Internal Applicants Only - Communications Officer Location Cardiff : Key Duties

• Provide professional advice and guidance on communications activity to internal customers, using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate course of action, and ensuring complex and conceptual issues are understood.


• Work closely with colleagues within academic schools and the College's marketing and international team to develop narratives to communicate the School's activity effectively to key stakeholders, including prospective students.


• Assist with the development of communications plans for academic schools, including an annual operational plan of upcoming activity, and make recommendations to improve communications activity.


• Produce high quality written copy for a wide range of audiences and purposes, to include School websites, social media channels, news articles and prospectuses.


• Take a proactive approach to public relations, forecasting upcoming media events and announcements and spotting and preparing newsworthy activity within schools. Repurpose and repackage news items for a wide range of different audiences.


• Help to embed communications activities within Schools by attending relevant committees and arranging meetings with academic faculty.


• Support the communication of research impact activity; work with Schools on communicating their research successes or special projects. An emphasis will be placed upon communicating the most prestigious research news for the Schools.


• Where necessary, to oversee and liaise with external designers and print companies on the production of printed material.


• Establish good working relationships with colleagues in the Marketing and Communications Division, ensuring information flow and therefore maximising the impact of communications activities.

• Ensure that an understanding of the importance of confidentiality is applied when undertaking all duties.


• Abide by University policies on Health and Safety and Equality and Diversity.


• Perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role.

Person Specification

• Degree/NVQ 6 or equivalent Professional membership/experience

• Substantial experience of working within a communications role


• Able to demonstrate professional knowledge within communications to give advice and guidance to internal and external customers


• Ability to write excellent copy for a wide range of stakeholders, for promotional and public relations purposes


• Ability to create short form video content for use on social media and other digital platforms

• Ability to communicate conceptually detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of people


• Ability to build working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders and to explore their needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered

• Ability to use initiative and creativity; identifying and proposing practical solutions to communications challenges


• Ability to work unsupervised to deadlines, planning and setting priorities for own work and that of others and monitoring progress

• Fluency in Welsh, written and oral


• Postgraduate/Professional qualification


• Experience of working in a Higher Education environment
