We are looking for a dedicated and compassionate Speech and Language Therapist to join our Community Learning Disability Team, supporting adults with learning disabilities across the Cardiff area.
You will be part of a supportive and experienced multidisciplinary team, working closely with individuals, their families, carers, and professionals to deliver high-quality, person-centred care in a community setting. This role is well-suited to a newly qualified therapist or someone seeking to develop their clinical skills in this specialist area.
Your role will be key in supporting people with learning disabilities to express themselves, engage with their communities, and maintain safe eating and drinking practices.
Main duties of the job
You will provide assessment, intervention, and management for adults with learning disabilities who have communication and/or dysphagia needs, working as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes psychology, nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and social care. Your role will involve developing and delivering person-centred therapy plans, supporting the use of alternative and augmentative communication (AAC), and promoting inclusive communication across different environments. You'll also provide advice, training, and support to families, carers, and support staff, and contribute to multi-agency planning and reviews.
You will receive structured supervision and regular peer support. Person Specification
Qualifications and Training
- Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree
- Registered member of RCSLT
- Registered member of HCPC
- Membership of CEN
Experience
- Experience of assessments in clinical placement or previous post
- Experience of planning and implementation of treatment in clinical placement or previous post
- Working within an MDT
Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of assessment tools relevant to the client group
- Accurate administration and analysis of assessments leading to differential diagnosis
- Knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to the client group
- Able to take an active role in the multidisciplinary team negotiating case management as appropriate
- Able to work independently and without direct supervision
- Experience of, and resolution of conflict
- Experience of audit projects within own clinical area
Personal Attributes
- Demonstrates understanding of own scope of practice and person centred care
- Ability to travel between sites in a timely manner to meet the business needs
- Ability to speak Welsh
