Fast ApplyMusic Teacher - Upper School (part-time)

Cardiff Steiner School are looking for a part-time Music Teacher to join the collaborative and passionate team in our innovative Upper School for age 14 to 19

Apply now – open until filled.

You will coordinate the Music programme across the Upper School, including group singing, general class music-making (to include voice, rhythm, tuned percussion and keyboards) and musical notation and theory.

You'll be working with the Steiner Waldorf curriculum and the Certificate of Steiner Education (NZCSE) - an assessment only qualification equivalent to A Levels, accepted by UK and international universities. It’s a unique opportunity to help develop, not only our Upper School, but also the lives of young people, free from the restrictions of GCSE and A level curricula and examinations.

About Music at the School

From age 6 to 14 all our students learn music with their Class Teachers, including pentatonic and diatonic flutes and recorders in consort, part and harmony singing and musical notation. From age 9 some students opt to to take individual, instrument instruction with our peripatetic instrument teachers (strings, piano and woodwind) who contribute to the School’s musical culture.

In Upper School students sing together as a choir using a wide variety of repertoire. Those playing instruments are encouraged to both support the choir and play for assemblies / festivals as well as solo and ensemble performances. As they progress, students work towards performing instrumental and choral compositions in performances, assemblies, plays and community events, throughout the year.

About the Role

The current role is 6 lessons per week over 2 days a week, plus planning, prep, meeting and professional development time. We have an approx. 36 week teaching year. Hours and timetable can be discussed with the successful candidate.

There is also the potential for the postholder to teach additional elective music lessons. These are specific music modules for students who have chosen to study music as one of their specialisms in Levels 2 and 3 of the NZCSE qualification. This would be working with groups of 2 to 4 students, for 3 to 4 afternoons per week, for a 3 to 4 week block. Music electives can cover performance, composition, music studies, music technologies etc. Music history blocks are also taught as part of the NZCSE, and, subject to the postholder’s skills and experience, there is the potential for the postholder to also teach some of these.

About Us

Set in Wales’ capital city, the School offers a full Kindergarten to Class 12 Steiner Waldorf education. Founded in 1997, we expanded to Upper School in September 2017 offering the New Zealand Certificate of Steiner Education (NZCSE), with our first Class 12 graduating with the Certificate in 2021.

The NZCSE is the first trans-national, secondary school qualification to be fully based on the Steiner curriculum. It’s an alternative qualification, equivalent to A Levels and the International Baccalaureate, recognised by UCAS and accepted by UK and international universities, so allowing students to progress to further/higher education free from the restrictions of GCSE and A level curricula and examinations. The NZCSE is the most widely offered qualification in UK Steiner Schools that offer a full K-Class 12 Steiner Waldorf education.

Our internationally diverse teaching team are a pioneering bunch with an irrepressible spirit who enjoy rising to the challenges and celebrating the joys that a young School brings.

We are a small school by design with a strong community spirit. Our teachers are at the heart of our success and we have developed a strong culture of collaboration where staff are valued and your input, enthusiasm and talents will be welcomed and appreciated. You’ll benefit from a professional development programme of mentoring, peer observation and training in delivery of the NZCSE.

We are a Waldorf UK full-member school, and are fully independent.

About You

You’ll be a committed, creative and resourceful individual with the skills and enthusiasm for working with young people, and be able to relate to and inspire them. With a high level of musical knowledge and understanding you’ll be able to teach singing as a group, as well as general class music-making, to include voice, rhythm and tuned percussion, and have the skills to support and lead students performing instrumental and choral compositions in performances.

You’ll have proven experience of teaching music to young people, an interest in Steiner-Waldorf education, and a commitment to deliver a developmentally appropriate Music programme that accords with the principles and pedagogy of Steiner Waldorf education.

We have an experienced team of qualified Steiner Teachers able to offer advice and support in working with the Steiner Waldorf curriculum, as well as a supportive professional development programme of peer mentoring and external training and development opportunities.

Cardiff Steiner School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. We particularly welcome applications from under represented groups including ethnicity, gender, transgender, age, disability, sexual orientation or religion.
