Software Engineering Lead – Governance & Standards

South Wales | £70,000 + Benefits

An excellent opportunity for an experienced Software Engineer / Technical Lead looking to move away from hands-on development and into a broader software engineering lead / governance position.

The role will take responsibility for establishing and governing software engineering standards across internally developed applications, integrations, automation solutions and service platforms.

Key Responsibilities for the Software Engineering Lead

  • Establish and maintain software engineering standards, practices and governance across the organisation.
  • Act as the technical authority for internally developed applications, integrations, automation solutions and service platforms.
  • Analyse existing technical services and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Ensure solutions are secure, scalable, supportable and operationally ready before entering production.
  • Provide technical leadership, design assurance and engineering oversight throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Review technical designs against non-functional requirements including availability, performance, security and supportability.
  • Manage one internal developer and oversee external software development partners, ensuring work meets agreed technical standards and requirements.
  • Promote engineering best practice, mentoring and the development of software engineering capability.
  • Contribute to the design and continual improvement of strategically important internal platforms and services.
  • Drive the adoption of CI/CD, automation and modern engineering practices.
  • Identify and reduce technical debt, engineering rework and production defects.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, development tools and engineering approaches, making recommendations to the CTO.

About You

We're looking for you, if you have a strong software development background and are now ready to move towards governance, technical leadership and continuous improvement.

To be successful in your application for the Software Engineering Lead position, you'll ideally have experience with:

  • Python, C#/.NET and JavaScript
  • REST API development
  • GitHub Enterprise and GitHub Actions
  • Azure App Services and Azure Functions
  • Designing and delivering software platforms, integrations or services into operational/production environments
  • Designing for scalability, resilience, maintainability and operational supportability
  • CI/CD and automated deployment
  • Engineering standards and technical design reviews
  • Architecture assurance and production readiness
  • Software development lifecycles and technical governance
