Reed Recruitment is seeking a reliable and hardworking Yard Operative to join our busy building materials distribution and stockholding operation. This hands-on role is crucial for the safe handling, storage, movement, and maintenance of a wide range of construction and building materials. The successful candidate will work predominantly outdoors in all weather conditions, playing a vital role in managing stock, maintaining material standards, and preparing customer orders efficiently and safely.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Load, unload, and move building materials using forklift trucks and other mechanical handling equipment.
- Receive incoming deliveries and ensure materials are stored correctly within designated yard locations.
- Pick and prepare customer orders accurately and efficiently.
- Organise stock to maximise yard space and maintain safe working areas.
- Assist with the loading of customer and company vehicles.
- Ensure products are handled carefully to minimise damage and waste.
- Conduct daily pre-use vehicle inspections and report any defects promptly.
- Carry out regular stock checks and inventory counts, investigating and reporting stock discrepancies.
- Inspect incoming and stored materials for damage or quality issues and report accordingly.
- Maintain a clean, organised, and professional yard environment, supporting general maintenance activities.
Required skills and opportunities
- Previous experience in a yard, warehouse, logistics, manufacturing, or building materials environment.
- Valid Forklift Truck (FLT) licence and practical operating experience.
- Good understanding of stock control and inventory procedures.
- Strong attention to detail when checking stock and identifying damage.
- Physically fit and capable of manual handling duties.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Reliable, punctual, and hardworking approach to work.
- Good communication skills.
Desired skills and experience
- Experience within a builders' merchant, timber merchant, or construction materials supplier.
- Knowledge of building and construction materials.
- Experience using stock management or warehouse management systems.
- Additional plant or machinery certifications.
- Driving licence.
