We're looking for an ambitious Assistant Management Accountant to join a growing distribution business in Cardiff. The opportunity:

You'll be at the heart of the finance function, supporting accurate reporting, strong financial controls and a clear understanding of business performance across the distribution operation.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Management accounts: Supporting the preparation of monthly management accounts, ensuring accuracy, consistency and timely delivery.
• Month-end reporting: Assisting with month-end processes, journals, accruals, prepayments and balance sheet reconciliations.
• Budgeting and forecasting: Contributing to budgets, forecasts and financial planning to help the business understand future performance.
• Variance analysis: Investigating actual performance against budget and forecast, identifying trends and highlighting opportunities for improvement.
• Commercial insight: Working with operational colleagues to understand cost drivers, margins, profitability and key business performance indicators.
• Stock and inventory: Supporting stock reconciliations, inventory reporting and the financial control of a distribution environment.
• Financial controls: Helping maintain robust processes, improve reporting accuracy and ensure compliance with internal procedures.
• Continuous improvement: Identifying opportunities to streamline processes, improve financial information and make better use of systems and data.
• Business partnering: Building effective relationships across finance and operations, communicating financial information clearly and constructively.

What we're looking for:

We're interested in people with the right blend of technical capability, commercial curiosity and ambition.

You'll ideally bring:

• Experience in a finance, assistant accountant or management accounts role.
• Progress towards AAT, ACCA, CIMA or another relevant accounting qualification, or a strong desire to develop professionally.
• A sound understanding of core accounting principles and month-end processes.
• Strong analytical skills, with the ability to investigate variances and spot inconsistencies.
• Good Excel skills and confidence working with financial systems.
• Excellent attention to detail, organisation and time management.
• A proactive approach, a willingness to learn and the confidence to ask questions.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with non-finance colleagues.

Experience in distribution, wholesale, logistics, stock-intensive or other operationally focused businesses would be advantageous, but we're equally interested in candidates who can demonstrate transferable skills and a genuine appetite to learn.
