When you join the Intelligent Infrastructure and Roads team you will be part of a national business comprising approximately 1100 diverse and skilled professionals in the UK, Ireland and India. You will work alongside industry leading people driven by quality and passion for doing the right thing.

Intelligent Infrastructure & Roads (IIR) is part of the Transportation and Infrastructure Business Unit. With a combined NR budget of £80m+, we provide design and delivery services across a wide range of strategic bodies, Local Authority clients and contractors across the UK and Ireland. We resource our projects globally using fully integrated teams.

Reporting to the Managing Director of Intelligent Infrastructure and Roads and sitting on our Senior Leadership Team, the IIR Strategic Growth Director is responsible for building sustainable growth, ensuring a great client experience, and the leadership of our Market Directors who focus on specific geographies and sectors. Working closely with our commercial, legal, and financial teams, you’ll foster a client-focused culture that champions project and bid leadership, personal ownership, and safety. Balancing the needs of our clients, our people, and commercial goals, you’ll play a central role in shaping our commitment to delivering exceptional service to our clients.

A Little More About Your Role…

  • As the Head of our Growth pillar, you will be leading a team of market facing individuals operating in different market sectors across the UK and Ireland
  • Accountable for leading and building a client focused sales culture and delivering sustainable growth, achieving a 12-month book to burn ratio of >1. Responsible for growing and converting the pipeline, driving best practice capture planning
  • Identifying and driving business development opportunities both internally and externally in selected growth markets
  • Leading reporting on sales data for the sector through analysis of our Oracle system data and PowerBI dashboards
  • Leading capture and acting as a Bid Director for our largest, most complex, multi- disciplinary bids and opportunities
  • Collaborating with colleagues across the business to develop new propositions and commercial strategies
  • Maintaining strategic relationships with clients, partners and suppliers
  • Providing oversight of Key Client Account activity for clients owned by the Business Unit
  • Implementing our sales governance processes ensuring Authority to Pursue and Authority to Submit processes have been completed robustly and in a timely manner
  • Co-ordinating across all aspects of operational and delivery excellence, technical expertise and people for the effective deployment of competent and experienced resources to bids and the successful mobilisation of projects
  • Engaging with the T&I bid support team to identify bid support

What We Will Be Looking For You To Demonstrate…

The successful candidate is expected to have a relevant degree or equivalent qualifications and come from a consultancy or industry background and able to demonstrate the following: 

  • Our Guiding Principles and values of the WSP organisation in all that they do
  • A deep understanding of public sector procurement processes is essential
  • Knowledge of the Intelligent Infrastructure and Roads sectors is desirable
  • Personal accountability for team delivery and development, ensuring a high performing client facing organisation
  • Proficient at cultivating strong client relationships
  • Demonstrable experience of winning major tenders including capture planning, pursuit management and tendering
  • Experience of reviewing, forming and working in joint ventures and partnerships
  • Demonstrable ability to influence the wider business to ensure commitment to major pursuits
  • Commercially astute and able to quickly identify, understand and articulate a range of strategic business challenges to identify and leverage opportunities
  • Strong collaborator with multiple partners using sophisticated influencing skills
  • A strong commercial focus with evidence of increasing business revenues
  • Ability to motivate the team to deliver in a high-pressure environment
  • The desire to constantly improve, motivate and encourage others and act as a catalyst for change, moving at pace to seize opportunity
  • Forward thinking, capable of visualising, planning and implementing longer term initiatives and strategies
